This First: Taking Care of the Hair you Have on Your Head
As we age, thinning or not, what we can control is how to take the very best care of what we currently have to work with. We absolutely can make the current keratinized hair on on our heads better. And, when the hair you have on your head looks better, I know you will be happier with it. Personally, I do not have a thinning hair regime without Olaplex.
So, let's get geeky about hair!
What are Disulfide Bonds? (DsB)
Hair is not alive. It is made up of keratin protein molecules, and the strongest thing holding those proteins together are Disulfide bonds, or DsBs.
We have all experienced this: you pull a hair and see the elasticity of it ... it stretches and doesn’t break. When you do that test though, you have basically broken DsBs.
You can break DsBs in a number of ways:
Physical breakage, through pulling
In the process of breaking the bonds, you have also weakened your hair and made it less strong and thus less able to handle
More environmental damage
One of the things that has been a focus in hair care is trying to reform these DsBs and that is what OLAPLEX does so well. Instead of coating your hair to protect it (just like putting on nail polish to protect your nails), Olaplex is actually working inside of those proteins by recreating those DsBs to strengthen the hair from the inside.
What’s the difference between this and a conditioning treatment?
Deep conditioning hair treatments are basically no different than putting a moisturizer on your skin; all you are trying to do is seal the hair shaft with a product that is going to retain moisture into the hair shaft. You are coating the hair shaft -- or making a sealant over the hair shaft. You are putting silicone in between the protein layers NOT inside.
Olaplex doesn’t do that. It is actually recreating the bonds and physically making the hair stronger. You can use deep conditioning treatments on top of Olaplex, though.
With anything, you have to stick with a plan and try different things. One and done is not the answer for long term change in your hair! If I had a dime for every product that promised to repair and protect, renew and revive, polish, shine and make A Real Difference, I'd be living in Jamaica full time working on my watercolors.
