The Worst Questions...

This is my experience: When you first talk to someone about your thinning hair, the pervasive, and swiftly-delivered, assumption is that you have a health issue. And let’s face it, our society doesn’t give unhealthy people a lot of respect. That's another blog for another day.

So there's health and medication and hormones and crappy habits and products and people love to smash these together based on something that happened to them or someone they know. HUG these friends, because they love you and are just trying to help.
Meanwhile, here are the most common questions / concerns and medical diagnoses I get/hear from people:

  • Are you stressed?
  • Have you had your thyroid checked?
  • Do you take Hair, Skin and Nail Vitamins?
  • What are you eating?
  • Do you have cancer?
  • Food allergies?
  • Hormones?

AAAAIIIIIIIIIIGGGGHHHH! Inside, I am screaming. IT’S GENETIC…we are predisposed to this condition. It's genetic for me and for lots of women. It isn’t always a medical diagnosis with a simple treatment.

I find these questions to be sexist and more confirmation that people just don’t understand. They believe that women losing their hair has to be a medical "something," and men don’t have to deal with the same explanations and scrutiny about their hair loss. They get to be sex symbols.

Because this is how our situation is greeted, it truly shows that women are not allowed to be bald or have thinning hair. In reality, many millions of women deal with this condition and hide it with wigs, treatments or they hide at home alone. That's the one that gets my back up. Staying home and missing life because your hair is falling out. They limit their lives around their insecurities. I have personally dealt with all of this to the point that I am fed up.

I am coming out with my greatest vulnerability. Here I am. I’m online. I’ve researched it…I tell people all the time about my condition. I own a hair salon, for God’s sake. I deal with it every friggin' day. But I'm here and my life is big.

So after all the "worst" questions, here are 2 I want to pose:

Aren't you ready to start living a bigger life?
Want to explore with me?

Then let's go - together!
